Mount Robson and Berg Lake

Last year I had the opportunity to hike up to Mount Robson and Berg Lake with a group of young men and another leader in our Church Scout Group. We did it over a period of 5 days, and here are some of the details.

The first day we hiked up to Kinney Lake. The second day we went all the way up to the Berg Lake campsite. That second day was painful, you gain almost all the elevation between Whitehorn and Emperor Falls. Emperor Falls is a beautiful sight and I suppose the ridiculously steep climb makes it that much more spectacular. The rest of the hike to the Berg Lake campsite is relatively level but it is still a fair bit of distance. It sure was nice to get that pack off and know that it wasn't going back on for a couple of days.

We spent two days (three nights) at Berg Lake. There is a lot of shorter day hikes available from Berg Lake. We hiked up onto Hargreaves Glacier's terminal moraine which gives you a spectacular view of Berg Lake, Mount Robson, and Hargreaves Glacier. Toboggan Falls was kind of cool as well. We also tried to cross over to Mist Glacier's terminal moraine but couldn't find a way across the river.

The last day we hiked the entire distance back down the mountain. Those last 7 kilometers after Kinney Lake felt like much, much more but we got down safely. Overall it was an awesome experience, although next time I need to be in much better shape.
